The course will cover the following topics:

Class 1: The Vision

  • Naming your nonprofit
  • The goal of your nonprofit
  • Target audience
  • Mission, Vision, Values
  • Founder's Syndrome

Class 2: Realization

  • Partnerships
  • Active service
  • Populations (access/vulnerable populations)

Class 3: Legal Structure

  • Selecting board members and officers
  • Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation
  • Obtaining an EIN
  • 1023 Application/Applying for 501(c)3 status
  • Charitable Solicitations Registration
  • Registered Agent

Class 4: Completing the Process

  • Website
  • Social Media (including a social media calendar)
  • Additional resources: Google, YouTube, Podcasts, Grantwriting workshops, Catchafire, Government Contracts, etc.

Ian Houston

Ian Houston is an alum of the University of West Georgia. He received a bachelor of science in sociology with a minor in Africana studies in 2013. Ian found his research interests in critical pedagogy, social justice, and academic empowerment in public schools. This led to his enrollment at Georgia State University where he pursued and completed his masters degree in social foundations of education. Professionally, Ian has more than 6 years' experience in workforce development and career services; specifically in the nonprofit and government sectors. As part of his master's degree program at Georgia State University, Ian founded, True-Liif C & M, Inc. which is a youth and family empowerment program. Ian is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Sociology from the University of West Georgia.
