Summer Institute in Museum Studies and Public History

You are cordially invited to our inaugural 2024 Summer Institute in Museum Studies and Public History conference being held on the University of West Georgia campus from June 10th through the 14th. Attendees will have two classes to choose from in this initial offering.

Fee: Registration fee includes books, materials, housing, and breakfast/lunch for all days.

One Class $750.00 / Discount Rate for Signing up for Two Classes is $1,350.00

Possible $250 scholarship available making each class $500.

Class One

"Oral History Techniques and Programming,” and will be taught by Dr. Keri Adams and Dr. Mark Janzen.

June 10th-12th, 2024

Mark Janzen is a museum professional with many years of experience finding ways to ask people the right questions and creating the right environments to elicit meaningful responses. As Director of the Center for Public History he helps to manage the many ongoing projects at UWG. Keri Adams is an experienced public historian with a decade of experience shaping and building UWG’s collection of oral histories spanning several major projects and initiatives, and co-director of the CPH. One of the architects of the process and management of the collections, Keri knows how to create the processes that will generate success for your oral history programs. Together, the leadership of the Center for Public History can help participants learn how to design and enable their own oral history programs for the benefit of their communities and institutions.

Class Two

"Creating Meaningful Interpretive Experiences,” and will be taught by Sarah Lisle.

June 12th-14th, 2024

Sarah Lisle is a seasoned and well-rounded interpretive professional with over 15 years of experience. Drawing from her academic background in Art Education (BFA, the University of Georgia) and Historic Preservation (MS, the University of Oregon), she loves to infuse projects with creativity and dig deep into the histories of people and places. Sarah joined the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area's non-profit as Director of Interpretation in 2017. During her nearly five-year tenure, Sarah reimagined existing interpretive programs to create more engaging experiences that aligned with professional interpretive standards. As lead facilitator for the National Park Service Southeast Regional Office's pilot interpretive training program, she has developed many interpretive products such as museum exhibits, waysides, and walking tours.
