“Introduction to Podcasting”

Description:
“Introduction to Podcasting” is a 6-week course taught in-person and virtually where students will learn about the fundamentals of podcasting and will be given the tools necessary to create a podcast episode of their own by the end of the course. The course will be broken up into two types of classes that will be alternated between each week, those being instruction sessions and Q&A discussions. The instruction sessions will be taught in-person and virtually, with the purpose being to go over new information that teaches students about podcasting and instructs them on their next steps in creating their podcast. The Q&A discussions will be taught virtually-only and are there for students to ask the instructor questions about the material, gain guidance and receive help and feedback with making their podcast. All sessions will last approximately 2 hours each week. The classes will be offered once a week at the same time every week.

Course Materials:
Notebook (or digital note taking app)
Yeti microphones (provided by UWG)
Webcams (provided by UWG)
Laptop or desktop computer
Audio editing software (Audacity or Adobe Audition)

Schedule:

Week 1: Fundamentals of Podcasting & Pre-Production (In-person & virtual)
Introduction to podcasting concepts
Brainstorming podcast ideas
Naming a podcast
Developing podcast ideas and concepts
Outlining podcast episode
Logos/branding
Making a plan for podcast episode

Week 2: Pre-Production Q&A Discussion (Virtual only)
Students ask instructor questions regarding pre-production and development of their podcasts
Discussion based on concepts covered in week 1
Students will be expected to submit their final concept ideas and outlines for their podcast episode

Week 3: Podcast Production (In-person & virtual)
Lecture on podcasting equipment including different types of microphones and recording software
Tips/techniques for best practices on recording
Best practices when recording by oneself or with a co-host
Proper ways of conducting oneself during the recording process

Week 4: Production Q&A Discussion (Virtual only)
Students ask instructor questions regarding production and recording their podcasts
Discussion based on concepts covered in week 3
Students will be expected to submit the raw audio recording of their podcast episode

Week 5: Post-Production (In-person & virtual)
Students will be taught the basics of editing audio in Audacity or Adobe Audition
They will learn the best techniques for editing their audio files and condensing them into a coherent episode
They will be shown ways to obtain copyright-free music and sound effects to add to their podcasts
Lesson on how to upload the podcast to proper podcasting platforms and promote them on social media

Week 6: Post-Production Q&A Discussion (Virtual only)
Students ask instructor questions regarding post-production and editing their podcasts through audio editing software
Discussion based on concepts covered in week 5
Students will be expected to submit the final draft of their podcast episodes (20-25 minutes long)

Bonus day: (In-person only)
At the end of the course, the class will meet one final time to listen to small snippets of everyone’s podcast episodes and give feedback. There will be food and drinks and everyone will be able to celebrate what they accomplished together.
