Why Would Anyone Give to Your Organization: From Transactions to True Philanthropy

Thursday, June 4, 2026
9:00 AM - 1:30 PM
UWG Murphy Building: Murphy Lab 1119

This interactive, practice-rich workshop reframes fundraising from asking for money to inviting people into impact and meaning. Leaders will understand why people give, design a donor journey that creates trust and delight, and embed a culture of philanthropy across their organization. Participants leave with role-clarity for board and staff, upgraded stewardship practices, segment-specific strategies for individuals, corporations, and foundations, and a 90-day action plan they can start immediately.

Workshop Description

Why would anyone give to your organization? Because you help them accomplish something they deeply value. In this 4-hour, hands-on workshop for nonprofit boards and executive leaders, you’ll learn the human reasons people give, map your donor’s journey from first awareness to lasting partnership, and practice conversations that lead to joyful, values-aligned gifts. We’ll align board, staff, and systems around a true culture of philanthropy and craft practical strategies for gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations. You’ll leave with a clear 90-day plan, proven stewardship upgrades, and language you can use in your very next meeting.

Desired Outcomes

  • Explain core motivations for giving and apply them to your messaging and meetings.
  • Map and improve your donor journey with specific touchpoints that build trust and delight.
  • Adopt a healthy fundraising mindset grounded in service, curiosity, and partnership.
  • Differentiate approaches for individuals, corporations, and foundations; know the role of the board and ED in each.
  • Upgrade stewardship (thank-you, impact reporting, ongoing engagement) to increase retention and upgrades.
  • Leave with a prioritized 90-day plan: 3 goals × 3 key actions, owners, and dates.
