Summer 2025

This camp provides attendees with a survey of the major global artistic contributions in art historical study from the prehistoric to the present day while creating complementary unique art pieces in a variety of media. Our overall aims will be to have fun, appreciate art from different cultures over time, and reflect upon how art is a part of our daily lives.

Throughout the class, our objectives will be to: build a vocabulary through which we can appreciate, analyze, and understand art; describe the relationship between history and the creation of art objects from cultural, religious, social, and individual perspectives; and utilize the principles of art to create dynamic artworks.

By the end of this course, attendees will be able to:
Utilize and explore the methods used by art historians, archaeologists, and museum professionals to analyze works of art and interpret their meaning within their cultural contexts.

Trace the development of motifs and artistic styles over historical time and across geographic regions. Understand the artistic and cultural contributions of world cultures from the Neolithic to the present day in a variety of media.
Hands-on arts activities include:

•Sculpting ancient figurines inspired by art pieces found in Spain, France, Japan, and the Middle East.

•Using mixed media to create a miniature medieval stained glass window inspired art piece.

Learning the principles of drawing with graphite, colored pencil, oil pastels, and markers.

•These skills will then be applied to creating a self-portrait inspired by Italian Renaissance artists and drawing a still-life based on Northern Renaissance art.

•Using data and spreadsheets to uncover the identities of a variety of mystery archaeological finds from the British Museum.

•Creating shadow puppets and putting on a traditional Kamishibai Japanese play.

•Using online AI tools to generate original artwork.

•Painting a class mural modeled after an iconic post-Impressionist artwork.

•We may also have a virtual guest lecture from a Smithsonian art historian if our schedule allows.

The course does not require any prior knowledge of art. Attendees will be able to take home all of their artistic creations at the end of the camp.
