Week II | June 9-13

 
You are cordially invited to our inaugural 2025 Summer Institute in Museum Studies and Public History being held on the University of West Georgia campus in June 2025. Attendees will have two classes during the week of June 9-13, "Textile Care and Preservation" and "Archival Management and Digitization of Collections."

Registration includes books, materials, on-campus housing, daily breakfast and lunch, and a Certificate of Attendance.

Week II - June 9-12 - Class One - Textile Care and Preservation
Instructor Savannah Bennett - East Tennessee State University
Savannah Bennett hold an MA in Appalachian Studies and is the Collections Manager for the Reece Museum on the campus of East Tennessee State University, and has been working with large textile collections for several years. Ms. Bennett will cover all aspects of managing and preserving historic textiles, including handling, storage, condition assessment and reporting, and basic preservation techniques. The class will also include methods for making textiles accessible to the public including databases, photography, and display techniques. All materials included.

Week II - June 11-13 - Class Two - Oral History Techniques and Programming
Instructor Avery Stanley - NPS-Piedmont South Atlantic Coast
Avery Stanley is a graduate of the History program at UWG and spent several years working with UWG's Ingram library Special Collections, as well as the National Parks service on a variety of archival projects. After graduation Avery was hired as a consultant for the national Parks Service CESU agreement with UWG. The course will cover all aspects of archival arrangement, ethics, and methodologies, as well as the most current perspectives on digitization of collections, including documents, photographs, 3-dimensional objects, and migration of magnetic and digital media.
