Carrollton Beginning Judo I
Dates: February 25 - April 15, 2019
Meets: M from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Registration Fee: $99.00
This introductory course will provide experience in the philosophy and techniques of martial arts in general and Judo in particular. The focus for this class is on the techniques used in competitive sport judo. Although the focus is sport related the techniques studied in this class are also applicable to self-defense situations (if properly developed and maintained).
This is a physical course so there are risks associated with exertion if you are not in good physical condition but we strive to minimize those risks while gradually increasing your conditioning over the course period. Judo has the fewest injuries per-capita of any contact sport worldwide because safety is always a driving concern with all the drills, exercises and techniques.
Students will learn the following during the course:
1. Fall or be thrown without sustaining injury.
2. Execute basic ground fighting techniques: holds, chokes and arm-locks.
3. Execute a variety of throwing techniques.
4. Explain the values, goals, cultural heritage, and historical development of judo.
5. Identify the social courtesies and etiquette of judo.
A Judo Gi (uniform) is required for class. Students may purchase their own uniform or rent ($20) or purchase ($50) the judo gis from the West Georgia Judo Club. The Judo Club generally encourages potential students to rent a gi when they first start as they are deciding whether to continue in judo or not.
Meets: Beginning Judo I will meet from 7-9pm on Mondays, 2/25, 3/4, 3/11, 3/18, 3/25, 4/1, 4/8, & 4/15. The course meets for 8 consecutive weeks or 16 hours.
Location: UWG Carrollton. Student Recreation Center (aka The Hangar)
Registration Fee: $99. Students must be at least 16 years old to participate and must provide a copy of their insurance card on or before the first night of class. Minor students must also complete and return the UWG Youth Program 2018 Waiver Form.
Students should wear a Judo Gi to each class.
