The College Writing Crash Course is a collegiate writing preparation workshop. Entering or re-entering the college environment can be intimidating-especially when we think about completing a writing assignment of any kind. While the mere thought of writing a college-level paper may worry you, knowing how to approach it can make all the difference! In this course, instructor Duane Theobald will help you understand what kinds of texts you'll be asked to study & write about in a college-level class-including novels, poetry, film, and others. Additionally, this course will shed light on some of the terminology you'll encounter when it comes to writing. After this course, you'll feel empowered to walk into a college class, be handed a writing assignment, and be a bit more comfortable tackling it.

Course Outline

  • Session 1: Discuss the variety of text you'll encounter when you're asked to write on the college level including selections from novels, short stories, poetry, and film.
  • Session 2: Cover terminology you'll encounter when it comes to college-level writing including thesis statements, topic sentences, how to structure a good paragraph, etc.
  • Session 3: Cover common grammatical errors such as commas, subject/verb agreement, and word choices.
